Vietnam Faces Expanded ASEAN Mechanism Choice (01/8/2011)

The regional economic integration process in East Asia began in 1997 at the first unofficial summit of the leaders of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries and Japan, the Republic of Korea and China (ASEAN+3) to increase dialogue and promote cooperation at many levels and in many fields of the socioeconomic life such as trade, finance, energy, agriculture, environment, labor, healthcare, culture and tourism. Under the ASEAN+3 mechanism, East Asian countries have played a remarkable role in developing the Chiang Mai Initiative and establishing US$120 billion's worth of common foreign exchange reserves to cope with a temporary imbalance in foreign currency supply and demand. ASEAN+3 cooperation has contributed to strengthening the trust of ASEAN investors.
