Vietnam sees Feb. CPI inflation at 8.4 pct y/y

The February increase compared with annual inflation of 8.4 percent in December and an 8.5-percent rise in November 2005.

The General Statistics Office said food prices – which account for nearly half the price basket used by Vietnam to calculate inflation – would have risen in February by 10.1 percent from a year earlier.

Food prices surged as usual around Tet, or the Lunar New Year festival, that ended early this month, with chicken – a traditional offering in Vietnam – fetching higher prices as a result of no new bird flu outbreaks in recent months.

Vietnam aims to keep inflation at less than 8 percent this year.
