The General Statistics Office (GSO) estimates Vietnam's consumer price index (CPI) will increase 0.2% in April after a decline last month, bringing the four-month index up to 3%.

The price of most consumer goods increased this month. Equipment and household appliances saw the largest hike in price at 0.4%.

Other commodities, including food, garments, footwear and services had an increase of 0.2%.

The GSO said the increase in price for foods and household appliances was due to rice exporters enhancing exports and the high price of imported plastic materials for making household appliances, that rose 6.3%.

Meanwhile, the bird flu and a drought in the North reduced the supply of food, fruit, vegetables, poultry and meat causing the prices to rise.

This month's index was controlled because of nine per cent declines in consumer gas prices, 0.3% in housing and construction materials and 0.2% in cultural, sport and entertainment services.

This month, gold prices increased sharply 4.8% over the last month and 33.9% over the same period last year while the US dollar value was up 0.1%.

The GSO also announced the office would apply new methods to calculate more effectively the index starting next month.

Head of GSO's Trade, Service and Pricing Department, Nguyen Thi Lien, said the new calculating method for 2006-10 would be applied to study the prices of 500 goods and services instead of 397.

The office will also update, the segment attributed to goods and services that make up the CPI index: "With this new method, the percentage allotted to food will decline to 42.8% of the whole in the 2006-10 period from 47.9% in the 2000-05 period.

The change in the method of calculating the index is expected to show a more accurate fluctuation in consumer prices over different periods.
