EC imposes 17pct anti-dumping tax on Vietnamese footwear (16/05)

According to VOA, the decision was made following pressure from the EU footwear industry’s pressure. Shoe-markers in Italy, Spain and Czech Republic have been very proud of their products. When Vietnamese and Chinese footwear flooded EU markets, they could hardly compete with them. The Czech Republic used to produce 13 million pairs of shoes each year, but now produces no more than 5.5 million pairs. The public has criticised the EC decision as it did not take into account the rights of consumers and retailers and took away European people’s opportunity to buy cheaper products. In addition, the decision also caused negative effects on other European people such as designers, businesses and distributors.
