APEC trade ministers to meet in Ho Chi Minh City (23/05)

The meeting will see the participation of MRT from the 21 APEC members, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Russia, Japan , the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, China, Thailand, and Singapore.

The summit, themed “Towards a dynamic community for sustainable development and prosperity" will cover such prime issues as APEC’s contribution to the WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiations, regulation of regional and bilateral free trade agreements (RTAs/FTAs) and the mapping of a Ha Noi action plan to implement the APEC’s Bogo Target on trade liberalization in 2010 9in developed countries and in 2020 in developing ones, according to Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen.

Discussions will also focus on working out a plan to decrease commercial transaction costs by 5 percent within the region through 2010 and measures to boost investment among APEC members, create favourable business environment for enterprises, foster technical and economic cooperation, and consider recommendations by the APEC Advisory Business Council (ABAC).

The meeting will be held in preparation for the Foreign Affairs and Trade Inter-ministerial Meeting and Economic Leaders’ Meeting to be held in Ha Noi in November, according to the minister.

A forum on trade and investment, which will be co-hosted on the sidelines of the summit by the Ministry of Trade, the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the HCM City People’s Committee in HCM City between May 31-June 1, is expected to bring together hundreds of representatives of businesses from economic members in a bid to enhance their exchanges and cooperative ties, added Minister Tuyen.
