Speaking at a national conference on planning and investment on Monday, Vietnam’s Minister of Planning and Investment, Vo Hong Phuc, praised the economy’s recent growth while commenting that the GDP would still have to grow at least 8.5 percent in the last half of the year in order to reach Vietnam’s initial target growth of 8 to 8.2 percent on the year. Comparing this first half-year to last year’s first half, it is estimated that the agriculture, forestry and aquaculture industries have grown up to 3.4 percent, while industry and construction expect to register an increase around 9.5 percent, and the service industry is estimated to have grown around 8.1 percent. Export values are expected to have increased by 23.5 percent on year to reach US$18.4 billion, while the trade gap is estimated to have reduced to $1.2 billion from $3.5 billion last year. Phuc stressed the need to carry out the 2007 socio-economic and environmental plans as next year will mark the beginning of Vietnam’s full integration into the world economy. He stressed that if GDP does not continue to grow around 8.2 percent next year the economy will fall behind both the regional and world standards. Phuc concluded that Vietnam’s development will depend on progress in several crucial areas including investment capital management, budget allocation, investment and official development assistance supervision, irrigation and transport inspection, as well as administrative reform and anti-corruption. |
