The country’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.4 per cent in July, representing increase of 4.4 per cent for the first seven months of the year and 7.5 per cent compared to the previous July, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

This is the third consecutive July CPI rise since 2004, breaking the usual CPI April to September standstill or decrease.

With this rising momentum, annual CPI should rise over 8.5 per cent, GSO estimated.

Household expenses and construction materials experienced the highest rise among 10 categories making up the CPI, and GSO attributed their 0.8 per cent rise to a hike in the price of cooking gas following the recent fluctuations of world oil prices.

Beverages and cigarettes ranked second with a 0.6 per cent rise from summer demand, GSO said.

Food products, making up the majority of the "basket" of goods and services, inched up 0.4 per cent, while garments, shoes and hats, home appliances, pharmaceuticals, medical and education services registered the same growth rate of 0.3 per cent.

Despite July’s 3.1 per cent dive in gold prices on the tail of world gold market turbulence, the price of gold in July increased by 44.7 over the corresponding period last year, reported the office.

The US dollar depreciated by 0.2 per cent in the period but it had a 0.7 per cent year-on-year increase.

While Ha Noi reportedly registered the highest inflation – 0.5 per cent – over the previous month, HCM City posted a July inflation rate under the average, at 0.3 per cent.

The Ministry of Trade’s Trade Information Centre warned prices on goods and services in the domestic market will remain volatile over the next few months, citing rising commodities prices – notably for petrol – on global markets, as well as Government plans to raise power prices and increase salaries for State employees.
