Vietnam is scheduled for its next phase of the 13th round of multilateral negotiations on accession to the World Trade Organization in Geneva in early October, endeavoring to join the world trade body at the soonest.

It also is expected to have extra negotiations with WTO members in mid-September to wrap up lingering issues from the 12th round last March, the trade ministry said.

According to the ministry, Vietnam’s commitment to WTO entry is being rotated to its partners for approval. If WTO members ratify the commitment, Vietnam will make public the negotiation details.

The 13th round began in July, focusing on summarizing Vietnam’s multilateral negotiations, discussing the Working Party’s draft report, and assessing Vietnam’s progress in strengthening its legal system in trade, investment, business, and intellectual property rights.

After 11 years of negotiations, Vietnam hopes that negotiating partners will work in good faith to create favorable conditions to complete the multilateral round to help the developing Southeast Asian nation become a WTO member. Vietnam on May 12 concluded bilateral negotiations with the United States, the last of 28 partners, paving the way to join the WTO by late 2006.
