The country’s consumer price index (CPI) is expected to rise 0.6 per cent in September due to impacts of weather, and diseases such as bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease that have affected agricultural production, said the Ministry of Trade’s domestic market managing team.
The high price of petrol, the effect of prices on the world market and the expectation of an increase in the minimum wage in October would also contribute to increased prices for many goods this month, the team said.
A surge in the price of foodstuffs in the Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta provinces would also continue this month due to increasing demand for rice for export to some Asian and African countries. The price of seafood, including tra, basa and shrimp, will also rise in September due to increased demand.
Prices for some kinds of food would go up slightly due to higher domestic demand, especially during the National Day.
The price of sugar is expected to decline slightly as the domestic market has a profuse supply.
Higher prices for coal, electricity, cement, steel, paper, transportation, and fertiliser in August would also create a ripple effect, putting pressure on the prices of many goods in the coming months. The team expects steel prices in particular to fluctuate greatly after September 15.
The CPI rose 0.4 per cent in August, driving inflation up to 4.8 per cent year-on-year, reported the General Statistics Office, but inflation in the first eight months remained lower than the 6 per cent rate experienced during the same period last year.
