Vietnam is a tourism market with high potential for growth, according to a report released by Thailand ’s Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) on Sept. 10.

Vietnamese arrivals in Thailand have been rapidly increasing with an annual average of 28 percent over the last five years (2001-2005) to number 195,457 in 2005. This is due to the supportive drive of the Vietnamese economy, which is growing steadily, and also the rise of purchasing power, the report said.

In addition, Vietnam’s policy of opening the country and easing the rules and regulations on bringing currency out of the country has enabled more Vietnamese people to travel abroad. The most popular tourism destination for Vietnamese tourists is China , followed by Thailand , according to the report.

KRC estimated that there would be totally around 250,000 Vietnamese tourists visiting Thailand in 2006, increasing by 28 percent over 2005 and earning Thailand ’s tourism an income of around $100 million.

Additionally, Vietnam is a new tourist attraction in Indochina, especially after the tsunami disaster. The trend of international tourism is tending to change away from Thailand and Indonesia to Vietnam. In the first seven months of 2006, international travellers to Vietnam reached 2.15 million. This year, Vietnam expects to receive around 3.6 million arrivals, the report said.

The report concluded that Thailand should turn the situation into a benefit where Thailand may expand the foreign market by cooperating with Vietnam to promote both countries together with others as a package destination, instead of competition for market share against each other.
