Vietnam is urgently preparing for this last round of negotiations. The scenarios for joining the WTO are in the last phase while the draft report on Vietnam’s WTO accession is being compiled for submission to the WTO Working Group.
An official from the MoT said that the multilateral round of negotiations may be held in early October, adding that “Vietnam is going on the right schedule”.
According to this official, the remaining issues that will be discussed during the upcoming round will be the rights for import and export business of foreign businesses between Vietnam and partners; issues related to export tax, luxury tax on alcoholic drinks, intellectual property rights, including copyright; the investment mechanism under the new Law on Investment and the Enterprise Law; and reviewing the bilateral negotiations on opening the markets for goods and services.
Last week the Vietnamese negotiation mission led by Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen reached an agreement with the European Union (EU) on the remaining multilateral issues.
Tran Quoc Khanh, Deputy Chief of the government WTO negotiation mission, who has just returned from the US, also revealed that his trip to Washington to solve the remaining problems between the two sides was satisfactory.
