Viet Nam’s gross domestic product (GDP) should reach a target of 8.2 per cent this year, Le Manh Hung, director of the General Statistics Office, told Viet Nam News yesterday.

The country’s economy recorded 7.8 per cent growth year-on-year for the nine months to September, despite being hit hard by several natural disasters and epidemic outbreaks including drought, flooding, avian flu and foot and mouth disease, Hung said.

Robust growth is expected in the fisheries and crude oil industries and service sectors such as tourism and telecommunications which are expecting similar growth on the heels of the APEC meeting to be held here in November.

Along with a forecasted boon in capital construction that will coincide with the start of the dry season real year-end GDP growth may reach 8.4 per cent, Hung said.

Hung did also offer a word in caution however, stating that the public should be aware of risks caused by natural disasters, epidemic diseases and escalating inflation. — VNS
