Legislators at the plenary session on Oct. 21 voiced the need to further improve the quality of the national economic growth while debating the socio-economic performance in 2006 and orientations for 2007.

Deputy Nguyen Ngoc Tran from the Mekong delta province of An Giang questioned on the not so high quality of the economic growth despite the fact that GDP has grown for six consecutive years and Viet Nam has been recognised as one of the countries attaining the fastest GDP growth rate in the world.

Tran also pointed out weaknesses in planning work, management and distribution of investment capital.

He argued that the development of high technologies should be focused on to add more value to the national economy in the future.

National Assembly deputies at the session showed their interest in the preparations for Viet Nam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Many deputies urged the Government to foresee precisely opportunities, difficulties and challenges, especially in the field of agriculture, when the country joins the largest trade body.

They wanted to know what measures the State will take to help farmers, the biggest group in the country's workforce, escape from possible risks stemming from the fierce competition of foreign farm products.

Legislators also praised performance by new cabinet members, especially in the fight against corruption.
