Opening a conference in Ha Noi on Viet Nam's WTO commitments, Deputy PM Khiem
stressed that by joining WTO, Viet
Nam has opportunities to expand markets for
its goods and services, promote socio-economic renewal, and attracting foreign
investment and technology which would help raise the country's competitive
edge.
WTO membership will enable Viet Nam
to play an equal role in the multilateral trade system without unfair
treatment, and improve Viet
Nam's position on the international arena,
said Khiem, who is also Chairman of the National Committee for International
Economic Cooperation.
The Deputy PM pointed out challenges Viet Nam has to face when joining
the largest world trade body, including increasing pressure from trade
competition and adverse impacts on the society.
Speaking at the conference, Markus Cornano, Ambassador,
Head of the European Commission (EC) in Viet Nam
said that Viet Nam's
WTO admission clearly proves the success of the country in 20 years of
renovation. He affirmed EC's continued support for Viet Nam's international
integration.
The conference to made public Viet Nam's WTO, held by the
National Committee for International Economic Cooperation and the Multilateral
Trade Assistance Project (MUTRAP), focuses on results of Viet Nam's talks for
WTO accession, commitments on tariff and implementation, Viet Nam's WTO
commitments relating to trade and services, possible impacts on Viet Nam's
agriculture and challenges to businesses and the government.
After this conference, attended by participants
from industries, localities and businesses in the north, two other similar ones
will be orgnaised for the central and southern regions
