Consumer prices in Vietnam rose by 0.5 percent in December, pushing the annual inflation rate to 6.6 percent, the General Statistics Office said.

Of the 10 baskets of commodities making up the consumer price index (CPI), foodstuffs and food services posted the highest increase of 7.9 percent as a result of the 14.1 percent increase in food prices, driven mainly by the increasing demand for rice exports and pest attacks.

Sports and entertainment costs recorded the lowest increase of 3.5 percent.

Vietnam reported 8.4 percent inflation last year.
