Businesses in hot competition over skilled labor pool (25/12)

As foreign companies continue to set up in Vietnam, a lack of highly-trained staff is leaving them in heavy competition for top-notch employees, said a human resources recruiter.
Le Phuong Phuong, an HR training expert said that Vietnam’s human resource pool satisfies only 30-40 percent of current market demands. A US-based headhunting company said the scarcity had pushed employee salaries up 15-20 percent over the last few years. In 2000, human resource managers were paid only US$300-500 per month, but can now earn as much as $1,000-2,000. Managers in other fields such as marketing and branding earn $1,000-1,200 currently. According to Vietcombank.com, skilled architects can earn as much as $10,000 per month. Nguyen Quoc Nam, HR CEO of US-based Kimberly-Clark in Vietnam said there was now a steady inflow of competent foreign workers into Vietnam due to rising incomes. They also chose to work in Vietnam as working abroad is one of the criteria for career promotion, Nam said. Experts said labor exchange was a natural tendency as business barriers among nations were gradually removed. They warned the trend would raise costs for enterprises. More importantly, major positions would go to foreigners rather than Vietnamese on the basis of more training, professionalism and English skills. International companies may also gain advantage over Vietnamese enterprises in attracting skilled labor as they have stronger financial potential and working conditions. Source: Nguoi Lao Dong |
