Inflation ticks up 0.5 percent in December

December's rise pushed the indicator up 6.6 percent year-on-year, lower than the 8.4 percent rate experienced last year and lower that the year's expected GDP growth of between 8.1 to 8.2 percent.
December saw a month-on-month rise of between 0.7 to 0.8 percent in the price of food and drinks, textiles and garments, footwear, home appliances and wedding services, contributing to the month's GDP increase.
GSO experts said December's price hikes conformed to market trends, as consumption rise during the last month of the year when people prepare for Christmas and Lunar New Year Festival (Tet).
Food prices surged by 2.4 percent due to continuing floods and damage to crops by pests in central and southern provinces.
Other commodities which experienced slight increases of between 0.1 and 0.2 percent included pharceuticals and products and services from the health care, education, sports, and recreation sectors. Beverage and tobacco prices decreased by 0.1 percent.
Oil and petrol prices, which were reduced twice, led to a marginal 0.1 percent increase in post and transportation costs.
The cost of housing and construction materials registered an average of 0.5 percent increase fue to the effect of high gas and fuel prices.
Gold for the month surged 3.2 percent, bringing the yearly increase to 27.2 percent, while the US dollar edged up 0.1 percent during the whole year.
