According to Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Head of the Department for Trade, Price and Services, economists earlier predicted an increase in the CPI of 10 major product categories this month, which was caused by a price hike in electricity, coal, cement and food as well as the approaching traditional New Year festival.
The construction materials group represented the highest rise of 3.08%, followed by the beverage and tobacco group, 1.65%, and the food and food service group, 1.13%.
Ha Noi reported the highest CPI increase of 1.47% among ten surveyed provinces and cities, followed by Dak Lak, with 1.31%, and Ho Chi Minh City, 1.17%.
Thang forecasts that the February CPI will increase by 2.5% due to the rise of electricity, coal and cement prices as well as the impacts of bird flu outbreaks and high purchasing power during the Lunar New Year period.
