The Ministry of Trade announced today that Viet Nam’s exports in January increased by nearly 8% year-on-year to US$3.3 billion, of which US$1.74 billion represents exports by foreign-invested companies. Among goods showing the highest export volumes, clothing and footwear have displayed remarkable growth this year, reaching US$500 million and US$350 million respectively. They were followed by wood products at US$190 million The major driving force behind export growth, however, was once again agriculture and aquaculture. Seafood products, one of Viet Nam's most competitive sectors internationally, remained in the leading position, setting an industry record of US$250 million in export turnover - a 40% increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the coffee industry earned US$210 million on the back of 150,000 tons earmarked for overseas destinations. The value of coffee exports grew by 85% year-on-year. The nation’s tea industry also witnessed remarkable growth. More than 80,000 tons of tea were exported, earning a record-setting US$9 million, a year-on-year increase of nearly 70%. Rice exports came to 50,000 tons in January, worth roughly US$15 million, a decline of nearly 80% due to the after-effects of the government’s ban on rice exports earlier in the year. According to the ministry’s Import-Export Department, aquatic products, rice, coffee and rubber still remain as the top four exported items of Viet Nam. Each of these products are expected to reach US$1 billion in export turnover this year. |
