Since smaller duties were implemented in mid-January, the Big C supermarket chain has been importing several consumer goods with preferential duties.

The carpet items are now taxed 12 percent for import into Vietnam compared to 40 percent previously.

Aluminum kitchen amenities are now taxed 30 percent after a 10 percent cut.

The import tariff on steel kitchen equipment has been cut to 20 percent, half its previous tax.

The Metro wholesale supermarket chain has rolled out imported beef at considerably lower prices compared to current market values.

A Hai Phong-based company has launched consignments of French-made biscuits with duties of 40 percent, 10 percent less than previous rates.

Import duties on beer have seen a 20 percent drop as the price of a 24-pack of Corona beer has fallen by VND44,000 (US$2.75).

Prices of many Chinese motorbikes have also reportedly declined.

But motorbikes imported from Europe are an exception as their prices are expected to rise.
