Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Director of the Trade Department, told Vietnam News Agency that prices of cultural products, sports and entertainment suffered the strongest decline of 1.16 percent, following by beverages and medicine, 0.72 percent.
However, the CPI in the first quarter of this year rose 3.02 percent due to the price hikes of electricity, coal, cement and food, according to the General Office of Statistics.
In March, the price of the US dollar fell by 0.1 percent, leading to a decrease of 0.43 percent in the first three months of this year.
Meanwhile, the price of gold went up 2.59 percent due to a rise in the world price and consumers' demand. According to experts, it was also attributed to the rebound of the real estate market of Vietnam after a slow-down period.
According to Thang, the CPI in April was likely to increase by between 0.1-0.2 percent due to the rising price of rice export.
The World Bank has forecast Vietnam's consumer prices this year would rise 6.5 percent while the International Monetary Fund estimated a year-end inflation rate of 7.1 percent.
The government has said it aims to keep inflation below the pace of this year's economic growth targeted at 8.5 percent.
