Industry grows 16.7% in four months (03/05)

Industrial output of domestic private enterprise grew 20.6 per cent, producing a value of $4.16 billion, followed by the foreign-invested sector, which grew 19.4 per cent, earning $4.52 billion in value. The State-owned sector generated only $2.72 billion in industrial output, for a growth rate of 7.4 per cent. A series of major processing industries obtained high growth compared to last year. Seafood processors reached 208,200 tonnes, or a rise of 17.5 per cent; ready-made clothes stood at 410,700 units, or an increase of 16.3 per cent; paper and cartons climbed 20.3 per cent to 344,600 tonnes; rolled steel production was up 31 per cent to 1.44 million tonnes; and machinery increased 21.5 per cent to 13,774 units. About 852,753 motorbikes were assembled, up 36.3 per cent. Some industries saw slower growth. Coal rose 7.4 per cent to 14.1 million tonnes while crude oil only reached 92.1 per cent of last year’s rate of output, with 5.24 million tonnes. Viet Nam generated 19.9 billion kWh, a growth of only 10.1 per cent, due to prolonged drought and sluggish construction of some thermoelectric plants. Chemical fertiliser was also among the slipping industries, with a 0.4 per cent increase, while production of bicycles declined sharply by 70 per cent. Industrial value in some cities and provinces was uneven. Ha Noi and Hai Phong obtained 18.5 per cent growth and HCM City and Binh Duong stoods at 12.5 per cent. However, Ba Ria-Vung Tau rose only 2.1 per cent. |
