The country's May consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.77 percent over that of April and more than 7.3 percent over the same month last year, said the General Statistics Office.
The CPI of 10 major product categories rose in May with the food and food service group recording the highest increase of 1.04 percent. The hike has been blamed on weather fluctuations and poultry and cattle epidemics.
Housing and construction materials saw the next highest increases, up 0.87 percent as the construction season begins to heat up around the country.
The prices of textiles and apparels, culture-sports-entertainment, transport and other services also rose due to increased consumption demand brought on by holidays and rising world prices.
Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho City reported the highest CPI increases in the country at 1.58 percent and 1.01 percent respectively.
Ha Noi and Dak Lak recorded the lowest increases of 0.46 percent for the capital and the 0.37 percent for the Central Highlands province.
The price of gold surged by 2.33 percent for the month while the price of the US dollar remained unchanged.
