The central Government has ordered urgent preparations and paperwork for two new economic zones in the northern border province of Quang Ninh to develop the Northern Focal Economic Zone.
In a statement released by the Government last week, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to cooperate with Quang Ninh authorities in fulfilling the development schemes for Van Don and Hai Ha economic zones in the province.
He also asked the ministry to draft regulations for the two zones in line with Quang Ninh's socio-economic development plan.
An official of the Quang Ninh People's Committee told the Daily that the Royal International Joint-Stock Company was undertaking a feasibility study for developing the Van Don Economic Zone in Van Don District.
Vinashin Group has been named the leader of a domestic consortium for a project to develop the Hai Ha Economic Zone in Hai Ha District, the official added. The two zones are expected to help boost the socio-economic development of the whole northern region.
The transport ministry and province authorities took a fact-finding tour over the weekend to explore locations planned for the US$200mil Van Don Airport, a shipbuilding plant for large-scale vessels of 300,000 DWT, and a 2,000 MW thermo-power plant.
These projects proposed by the Royal International Joint-Stock Company and Vinashin Group are part of the infrastructure development plant or the two new economic zones.
The projects will also help lay the foundation for developing the petrochemical, shipbuilding, power, transportation, and property sectors as well as for tourism.
In the middle of March, Vinashin Group and its consortium began work on the Hai Ha Economic Zone project, which will require a staggering US$15bil.
Quang Ninh, which is part of the Northern Focal Economic Zone, is situated in the heart of two planned economic corridors connecting China's Kunming and Guangxi with Vietnam's northern provinces.
