The nation’s service sector over the first half of this year posted a year-on-year increase of 15.7 percent, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

The ministry said the impressive success resulted from the Government’s policy to restructure the economy by focusing on the development of the service sector.

The service sector in the first six months accounted for 38.8 percent of the country's GDP. The highest growth was seen in the post and telecoms services with an increase of 71.5 percent compared with the same period last year. Hotel and restaurant services grew by 12.74 percent; transport, warehouses, 10.8 percent; and finance and banking, 10.8 percent.

According to the ministry, the service economy is thriving, creating a driving force to attract foreign investment. Over the first half of the year, the ministry licensed 187 foreign investment projects involving the service sector.

These projects had a registered capital of 1.78 billion USD, an increase of 2.2-fold in value compared with the same period last year.

Among major projects are the 276 million USD resort complex in the Chan May economic zone in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue and the Vinh Hoi leisure and entertainment project worth 110 million USD.

Different sectors including aviation transport, telecoms, and finance and banking have also entered into joint ventures or have signed deals with foreign partners to provide high quality services.
