Increasing the number and quality of auditors is at the forefront of Viet Nam ’s efforts in raising standards to meet international norms.
A representative of the Ministry of Finance said the ministry is amending regulations to grant standardized auditor certificates which are expected to be released in 2008.
The ministry is also working with auditing companies from the UK , Singapore and Australia to introduce training courses for Vietnamese auditors in a bid to keep up the number of qualified auditors in the country.
At present, Viet Nam has close to 900 practising auditors, with only 300 that hold internationally recognized certificates.
To date, Vietnamese auditing companies do not cover all of the needed areas such as private enterprises, limited liability companies and cooperatives.
It is little surprise to the industry that Vietnamese businesses continue to choose foreign auditing companies that provide accurate and transparent services.
Bui Van Mai, President of the Viet Nam Association of Certified Practising Auditors (VACPA), admitted that Viet Nam’s accounting and auditing quality are much lower than international standards.
To create better conditions for accounting and auditing activities, agencies have issued regulations and upgraded 26 accounting standards to meet international level so as to meet the demands of domestic and foreign investment and bond issuances abroad.
Currently, Viet Nam has 136 auditing companies that provide over 20 services for customers. The number of auditors in the country is expected to skyrocket to 3,000 by 2010.
