The VN-Index remains in a tight trading band with buying in mid and large cap stocks lifting the bourse slightly yesterday as investors await more third quarter earnings results.

The index increased 0.48 per cent to 1,104.61 points with turnover at 12.9 million shares worth VND1.3 trillion (US$812 million). Fifty-two stocks gained, 41 fell and 25 went unchanged.

Trading activity in Sacombank (STB) swelled to 2.1 million shares worth VND153 million, up more than 54 per cent over Thursday’s figure. STB share prices, though, remained at VND73,000.

Blue chips that gained yesterday were Vinamilk (VNM), up 2.09 per cent to VND195,000 a share, and the Financing and Promoting Technology Corp (FPT), up 0.71 per cent to VND283,000.

Newly-listed companies continued to do well on the back of low price-earnings ratios and high profit expectations.

Nguyen The Anh, deputy manager of research at Saigon Securities Inc, said buying in new stocks would likely continue for another few sessions due to strong demand from retail investors searching for bargains.

Can Tho Agricultural Technical (TSC) concluded its sixth session in the green yesterday by climbing 5 per cent to VND63,000 a share, though turnover was limited.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau Housing Development (HDC) rose five days in a row and closed Friday’s session up 4.66 per cent to VND101,000.

On the Ha Noi Securities Trading Centre, the HASTC-Index ended at 362.27 points, up 1.25 per cent, with turnover at 5.4 million shares worth VND660.8 billion.
