Vietnam ranks 48th out of 72 nations and territories on its maiden appearance in the Globalization Index based on its economic integration, personal contacts, technological connectivity, and political engagement.

The Globalization Index 2007, an annual report by US-based consulting firm A.T. Kearney and Foreign Policy magazine, measures 12 variables grouped into the above four categories.

In terms of trade, Vietnam, one of the 10 nations making an entry into the index, ranked 10th.

It was 15th in remittances and 19th in economic growth.

Its lowest ratings were in Internet connectivity at 71st and UN peacekeeping at 69th.

Export-driven sectors like textiles and garments had helped the country's economy develop and further integrate into global supply chains, A.T. Kearney said.

This year's index, however, examined statistics from 2005, the most recent year for which the data is available.

In 2006-2007 Vietnam made great progress in global integration – it entered the World Trade Organization in November last year, foreign direct investment inflows surged, and the country got a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2008-09.

All of these portend a climb up the ranks in upcoming indexes.

The countries making up the index account for 97 percent of the world's gross domestic product and 88 percent of the population.

The top 10 in the list is made up of Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Denmark, the US, Canada, Jordan, and Estonia.

A.T. Kearney, founded in 1926 and based in Chicago, is an international management consulting firm with offices in 33 countries.

Foreign Policy, founded in 1970 and headquartered in Washington, reports on global politics and economics.
