Vietnam: a future software leader? (17/12)

Hoang Viet Anh, the 31-year-old director of FPT’s Asia-Pacific Singapore branch, believes Vietnam can achieve the target and compete with Chinese and Indian software exporters within a decade.

Sounds wild, but maybe he has a point.

In February 2007, IBM established a service center in Ho Chi Minh City to supply the software markets in Europe and Africa.

In the next two or three years, it’s estimated that between 3,000 and 5,000 Vietnamese programers will working there.

“[The move by IBM] has proven that our ability to write and export computer software is recognized by international partners,” Viet Anh said.

“I hope that one day we will be known as home to some of the world’s most talented software writers.”

With a population of more than 85 million, half under the age of 30, Viet Anh said the country has the potential to become a future software market leader.

“In this digital age, Vietnam’s young people must pioneer new technology and brush up on their language skills and professionalism,” he said.

“By doing so, we’ll be able to put our home country on the world’s information technology (IT) map.”
