Talking to the press in Ha Noi before concluding his Viet Nam visit on the morning of February 21, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda recommended the State Bank of Viet Nam (SBV) to continue strictly monitoring foreign currency influx in the country as well as travelling accounts and payment balance so as to ensure the balance between supply and demand.

Growth and inflation are the two issues that always go hand-in-hand. In particular, outside factors such as the world’s materials and crude oil prices have a great impact on economies like Viet Nam. Viet Nam as well as other Asian countries will be influenced by the slowdown of the US economy, he emphasised.

However, Haruhiko Kuroda noted, these are only difficulties in 2008. In the medium- and long-term, Viet Nam and other regional countries are still able to maintain high economic growth at the rates between 8.5-9 percent, he predicted.

During his first visit to Viet Nam as an ADB President, Haruhiko Kuroda was received by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. He also held talks with senior leaders of the SBV, the Ministry of Planning and Investment and other key branches and ministries.

At the meetings, Kuroda affirmed ADB’s commitment to continue helping Viet Nam in economic development and poverty reduction.

ADB will continue providing preferential loans to Viet Nam to help improve infrastructural facilities, medical services and public administrative reform, he said
