State budget solvent enough to shoulder petrol importers’ loss (20/05)

The price of oil with delivery in June, yesterday afternoon reportedly increased a little over the morning, hitting $126.62/barrel. In Singapore, A92 petrol price hovered around $130/barrel. With such prices, importers said, they would incur heavy losses even if they raise the retail price by VND1,000/litre.
However, the Government is still determined to restrain petrol prices in an effort to curb price increases. An official told VN Express yesterday afternoon that though the oil price is now staying at high levels, the average oil price of the last five months is $105-110/barrel only, which is still bearable for the State budget.
“The Government’s plan is to use the state budget to compensate for the losses incurred by petrol importers. The retail price adjustments will only be considered if the oil price exceeds the budget,” he said.
The Ministry of Finance is trying to use the state budget to compensate for petrol importers’ loss, estimated at VND1tril every month.
The ministry yesterday promulgated the document stipulating the mechanism on providing free kerosene to minority households and poor families in the areas where there is no national electricity grid. The State will give them sums of money equal to 5 litres of kerosene every year.
