President Nguyen Minh Triet said at a meeting to review the implementation of co-operative regulations between the President and the presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee in Hanoi on December 24.

A report from the Presidential Office and the VFF Central Committee highlighted that in 2008 the implementation of co-operative regulations between the two agencies was strengthened, contributing to the improved operational efficiency of each side, consolidating great national unity, accelerating the nationwide emulation movement, promoting democracy, building the party, and developing and protecting a socialist law-governed State. With the President’s support, over the past 11 months, the fund for the poor has mobilised VND448.5 billion to build and repair 44,000 houses for those in need.

President Nguyen Minh Triet praised the VFF’s role in strengthening great national unity and promoting the strength of the whole nationwide to accelerate the national emulation movement and help the Party and State overcome difficulties to achieve a GDP growth of nearly 6.5 percent, socio-political stability and well developed culture, education and health care.

Mr Trier emphasised that in 2009 Vietnam will have to face a number of difficulties and challenges, especially the impact of the global economic downturn and efforts by hostile forces to thwart the progress of the nation, democracy, human rights and religion. Therefore, the country should promote great national unity to overcome difficulties, Mr Triet said.

Mr Triet urged the VFF to encourage citizens to implement five Government measures to prevent an economic meltdown, maintain growth, ensure social security and better implement the granting of special amnesty on the upcoming traditional Lunar New Year festival (Tet). Mr Triet committed to coordinating with VFF to successfully organise the 7th VFF congress and better implement its supervisory function.
