Turnover in February reached over US$1.6 billion, bringing the total in the first two months of this year to US$5.365 billion, 5 percent lower than the same period last year, due to sluggish exports in January.
In particular, in February, rice exports made steady gains, both in terms of quantity and total value against the same period in 2008. In the first 10 days of February, over 280,000 tonnes of rice were exported and the turnover was US$124 million.
Since the beginning of this year, 600,000 tonnes of rice have been exported with a total turnover of over US$220 million, three times higher than the same period last year.
Also, the export of computers and electronics products continues to pick up in comparison with late 2008.
In the meantime, there is a decline in other exports, including garments, wood, handicrafts, footwear, aquatic products, coffee and rubber.
Prices for many goods are also going down. Coffee has decreased 8 percent to US$1,536 per tonne, rubber is down 3.4 percent to US$1,342 per tonne, and coal has fallen by 33 percent to US$45 per tonne.
