Nguyen Quang Vinh, deputy director of the Enterprises' Office for Sustainable Development under the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, made the statement at a press conference yesterday.

He announced that most small and medium-sized businesses still failed to pay sufficient attention to CSR due to inadequate knowledge about its benefits.

With support from the United Nations Development Programme, the chamber is implementing a two-year project to encourage Vietnamese businesses to adopt CSR.

This would be achieved through the promotion of the United Nations Global Compact (GC) initiative, one of the key frameworks for the promotion of CSR around the world, and by facilitating partnerships between the public and private sectors, Vinh said.

Promoting CRS in Viet Nam through the GC Network Viet Nam would be the first and most important component of the project, he said.

"Participating in the network will help firms improve their reputation and enhance their brand names among consumers and investors, as well as increase employee productivity," he noted.

The network would be a forum for participants to share experiences on how to operate more efficiently and establish partnerships.

The network currently had 16 members, including 11 businesses, most of them multinational companies, he said.

As part of ongoing efforts to develop CSR performance, the chamber will organise a seminar on April 1. Participants will include representatives from Government agencies, business associations, foreign experts and CEOs from 50 companies. During the event, participants will learn more about developing CSR communication strategies to effectively target their national and international suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.

A recent survey conducted by the Institute of Labour, Science and Social Affairs at 24 labour-intensive garment and leather shoe enterprises shows that due to the strict execution of CSR, their revenues grow by 25 per cent per year and productivity has markedly increased.
