The APEC leaders agreed to continue stimulus measures and to implement a growth policy which is comprehensive, balanced and sustainable to ensure long-term economic recovery as outlined by the G20 summit in September this year.

They reiterated their commitment to the Bogor goals of trade liberalization and investment, and assigned their respective ministers to assess the results of developing economies implementing these goals in 2010.

The leaders pledged to jointly deal with the challenges of climate change, looking towards the Copenhagen summit scheduled for December 2009. They also pledged to open markets, create no barriers against trade and investment, fight protectionism in all forms and join efforts to conclude the Doha round of negotiations within 2010.

Addressing the APEC second retreat session, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet proposed APEC members send a stronger joint message to the Copenhagen summit and strengthen cooperation and technology transfers to help each other develop clean technology, alleviate the impact of climate change and improve the capacity to mitigate natural disasters.

On the same day, the APEC meeting on climate change was held at the initiative of Australia and Mexico. The Danish Prime Minister, who will host the Copenhagen summit, attended the meeting and delivered a speech on preparations for the summit.

On the sidelines of the 17th APEC meetings, President Triet held talks with many APEC leaders from China, Russia, the US, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Chile, Peru and the Republic of Korea. They praised Vietnam’s achievements and expressed their support for Vietnam assuming the Presidency of ASEAN in 2010.
