In December alone, the exports were recorded at more than $1.3 billion, Vietnam News Agency reported Saturday, citing figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Rice remained the leading export product for the sector, with total shipments surging 22.7 percent to 5.8 million tons. However, the export value declined by more than 10 percent to only $2.6 billion compared to 2008, according to the ministry.
Similarly, coffee exports fell nearly 20 percent in value to $1.7 billion while total volumes rose slightly by 3 percent.
Falling global prices also hurt many other produces, with tea being the only exception. Full-year tea exports surged 27 percent in volume and 21 percent in value, the ministry said.
The global economic slump has dampened demand for furniture products, the ministry said. Vietnam exported $2.5 billion worth of wood products in 2009, down 10 percent from last year.
Meanwhile, seafood shipments brought back $4.2 billion for the country, a 6.7 decline compared to 2008.
