Ambitious export targets set for agricultural sector in 2010 (12/01)

The ministry also predicted rice exports would reach a total of 5.5 million tonnes for this year.

The price of farmed products increased slightly at the start of this year due to an increase of import demand, said Trang Hieu Dung, head of MARD’s Planning Department.

Some farmed products had recovered to a reasonable price but they were still lower than in 2008, he said. The ministry has told enterprises to improve the quality of their products in order to increase their export value.

Dung said that rice had the most potential this year because the supply of rice in the world market was forecast to fall while demand was predicted to increase sharply.

This was based on the fact that some large, rice producing countries have cut areas of cultivation and reduce exports for domestic purposes, he said.

The Viet Nam Food Association’s Chairman, Truong Thanh Phong, said that the price of rice increased recently and was expected to continue to increase in response to surging demand. Since the end of last year, the price of export rice had jumped by 20 per cent from November 2009 to an average of $650 per tonne, he said.

So far, Vietnamese rice exporters had signed contracts to export 2.38 million tonnes of rice this year and 1.5 million tonnes would be delivered in the first quarter, he said.
