Vietnam Puts Sustainable Development Firmly on Agenda (11/01)

Holcim Group, one of the world's leading providers of cement, aggregates, ready-mix concrete and asphalt, has been in Vietnam since 1993 and considers sustainable development its priority target. To fulfill this target, Holcim Vietnam has followed international regulations and standards and other related requirements of products and production activities. In detail, it has applied the ISO 14001 environment management system in monitoring and controlling carbon emissions and assessing and controlling dust emissions, water treatment and solid waste management. In addition, it has more efficiently used fossil fuel resources and natural resources to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions while building a safe working environment; taking care of worker's health through safe operation processes; participating in livelihood improvement projects for the community such as raising income for people, supporting street children, growing safe vegetables, building roads, bridges, schools, and improving water sanitation. Holcim Vietnam Company has supported VCCI to establish VBCSD as one of the organization founders. Thanks to its effective environment management and high social responsibility, Holcim Vietnam Company has awarded many prizes for environmental protection, product quality, social responsibility of enterprises, supply chains targeting CSR and the environment. As a result, the Holcim brand name has been popularized and raised its confidence among customers.
The Tia Sang Battery Joint Stock Company of the Vietnam National Chemical Group has piloted a sustainable development model and gained achievements that will be expanded in the chemical sector. Many businesses in Vietnam in the fields of food processing, aquatic product processing, paper and paper pulp production, material processing, construction material production, and textiles and garments have also begun implementing sustainable production and consumption, applied cleaner production, participated in programs to promote social responsibility of businesses and labor insurance programs which bring notable benefits for businesses and employees alike.
Nguyen Le Thuy, vice head of the Sustainable Development Office of the Ministry of Planning and Investment said that by applying clean production technology, saving materials and fuels in production to make friendly environment products and fulfilling social responsibility, the business community has not only developed in a sustainable way but has contributed remarkably to the sustainable development of the whole country. Therefore, VCCI has accelerated to establish VBCSD to bring into full play the role of business community and VBCSD has been approved by the Vietnamese Government.
Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of VCCI said that VBCSD gathers Vietnamese enterprises, multinational corporations and business associations related to the cause of sustainable development to contribute and encourage the business community to lead the implementation of Vietnam's Sustainable Development Strategy Orientation.
VBCSD will also enhance the dissemination and popularization of sustainable development policies to foreign enterprises operating in Vietnam to attract more foreign investment and polish the country's image, function as a bridge for government agencies and businesses to communicate and reflect the actual demand of enterprises in the process of implementing sustainable development programs. In addition, VBCSD will strengthen the role of advising and recommending policies, involve in activities of the Government, ministries and other authorities. The active participation of the business community in the 21 agenda will decide the success of Vietnam's Sustainable Development Strategy Orientation and will create a close connection between the Government and businesses and other elements in society for a joint benefit and goal.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, President of the Vietnam National Council for Sustainable Development expressed his wish that VBCSD will promote business community to lead the implementation of Vietnam's Sustainable Development Strategy Orientation. He added that active participation of business community in VBCSD will lay a strong foundation to help Vietnamese business community develop in a sustainable and dynamic way and integrate successfully in the 21st century while contributing to the cause of economic development, poverty reduction and environmental protection in Vietnam./.
