Having a fair complexion and looking like a lower secondary school student, Nguyen Van Hoa impresses others with his bright eyes, nimbleness and honesty. Surrounded by correspondents, he shared, "This is the third time I participate in the IEYI. In the previous two times, I won a consolidation prize and a second prize."
Nguyen Van Hoa was born in a poor family. Having a passion for painting and assembling, when he was small, Hoa already had the habit of collecting broken electrical items, disassembling them and putting usable components together to create fully-assembled items. Initially, Hoa made only simple products just to satisfy his passion and for his nephew. In 2007, when his school informed about the IEYI, a number of ideas arose in his mind. He began to assemble a robot using usable components of broken electrical items such as electric fan, flashlight, radio set and computer. With the first robot he created in that year, Hoa won a consolidation prize at IEYI 2007. In 2008, he continued to participate in the exhibition with a multifunctional fire-truck model and won a second prize. "Were your parents happy when you won a prize?" - I asked him - "Yes, they were happy but afraid that I would neglect studying. My parents have experienced many hardships and they want me to concentrate on studying so as to have a better life." - Hoa said. For the past 12 consecutive years, he was an excellent student.
Sharing the source of inspiration that encouraged him to create the multifunctional agricultural robot, Hoa said, "My family is just farmers. Every time I saw my parents returning from hard work in the field, I felt very sad because I couldn't help them. I created the multifunctional agricultural robot with the hope that it can replace my parents to work on the field."
Hoa assembled this robot within only 15 days to meet the deadline for participation in IEYI 2010. After it was fully assembled and plugged in, the robot blew due to a voltage error. Construction materials needed to reassemble the robot had become scarce and the deadline was rapidly approaching. At that time, Hoa was so discouraged that he could not eat and sleep. He intended to cancel his participation in IEYI 2010. However, thanks to the encouragement of teachers, parents and friends, Hoa continued. He traveled more than 30km by bicycle to buy materials and successfully reassembled the robot. "When I saw the robot taking its first steps in a maize field and spraying pesticide, while my family watched, I was so happy and leaped for joy. I was happy because I had created a product that would help my parents in their work." - Hoa joyfully said.
Hoa's multifunctional agricultural robot can be transformed to do many things such as spraying pesticide and harvesting agricultural products. In the initial form, it is 50cm tall and 8kg in weight, so the robot is very mobile due to a chain wheel system at the bottom. When it is operational, the robot will be transformed to look like a one-meter tall person. The two arms can move flexibly. For the robot to spray pesticide, each of its arms will be attached to a spray spout. The back of the robot will be attached to two water pipes and two propellers. To make the robot capable of picking fruit, the two spray spouts will be replaced with robot hands. The robot operates with electric currents coming from 6-12V batteries that are connected to the control board. Hoa's product was highly appreciated by the organizers of IEYI 2010. Apart from a special prize from the organizers, Hoa also received a WIPO award.
Although he has won a special prize for the multifunctional agricultural robot, Hoa has lots of other bright ideas. He shared, "I want to become a student of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology or the Hanoi Architectural University so that I can create more products that can reduce the hard labor people have to do, especially farmers like my parents. I hope that my multifunctional agricultural robot will be of interest to investors and businesses so that it can become a useful product for farmers."./.
