Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) jumped 1.74% month-on-month in January as prices of 10 out of 11 groups of goods rose, according to the General Statistics Office. The figure was much higher than last January’s 1.36%.

Restaurant and catering services and educational products registered soaring costs this month as the two groups surged by 2.47% and 2.89% respectively. Beverages and tobacco were up 1.67%, garment, hat and footwear 1.81%, and other goods and services 1.04%.

For the restaurant and catering group, food prices rose 2.28%, foodstuffs up 2.74%,  both were driven by preparations for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Thua Thien-Hue and Gia Lai provinces suffered the sharpest CPI increase of 2.03% in January, followed by Haiphong with 1.71%, Hanoi and Thai Nguyen with 1.68%, Danang 1.64%. Vinh Long and Khanh Hoa posted slight CPI increases of 0.93% and 0.89% respectively.

Urban areas this month saw the CPI lower than in rural areas at 1.56% compared to 1.68%.
