Figures on www.census.gov indicated the Vietnam-U.S. trade increased by more than US$3.1 billion compared to 2009, marking a strong recovery and expansion in their trade value after a slight drop due to impacts of the global economic slump.
The bilateral trade volume last year is a record number for annual bilateral trade of the two countries in the past 15 years. Earlier, the HCMC chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) projected bilateral trade at US$18 billion at the Vietnam-U.S. Business Forum Year-end Dinner in HCMC in December.
Of the total of over US$18.5 billion last year, the U.S. imported more than US$14.86 billion worth of mostly consumer goods, or over US$2.58 billion over 2009.
Apparel, furniture, footwear and seafood accounted for more than half of Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. in 2010. Textile and apparel were Vietnam’s biggest export earner from the choosy market, and the U.S. general imports data showed total value of this export at over US$6.2 billion, as against US$5.33 billion recorded in 2009.
The U.S. general imports data at http://otexa.ita.doc.gov/msr/catV0.htm show Vietnam was the U.S. second largest exporter of textile and apparel last year after China, and above India, Indonesia and Mexico.
Last year, the U.S. exports to Vietnam stood at US$3.71 billion, up more than US$610 million compared to the year before, and included machinery, equipment, spare parts, and fiber among others.
