Inflation soars to 6.12% in first quarter (25/3)

All commodity categories increased in price this month, with sharpest increases reported in transport with 6.69%. Housing and construction materials followed with 3.67% due to higher steel, iron and electricity prices.
Food and restaurant services jumped 1.98% month-on-month, of which food was up 2.18%, foodstuffs 1.57% and catering services 3.06%. Footwear and garment products rose 1% while home appliances increased 1.22%.
Many localities suffered higher CPI than the national average this month, including HCMC with 2.2%, Hanoi 2.41%, both of Thai Nguyen and Danang 2.39%, and Haiphong 2.43%.
The CPI in urban areas rose by 2.18% against last month, slightly higher than in rural areas with 2.15%.
The high figure in the first quarter suggested a difficult task for the Government to keep 2011’s CPI under 7%.
