The law on EEC has been in operation for nearly half of a year; however, few people are aware of energy efficiency measures. In your opinion, what energy saving measures can businesses apply immediately?
The law on EEC has been implemented since January 2011; so it is relatively new and few people are aware of its contents. However, this is an opportunity for businesses specializing in producing energy saving products, as the demand on energy saving products will increase as a result of the legislation. The law will drive energy users to use energy saving products and businesses to apply energy saving measures in production. The application of energy saving measures will bring economic benefits for users and businesses.
Energy users can apply energy saving measures intermediately such as replacing incandescent bulbs by compact lamps, LEDs or solar powered lamps. The illumination capacity of a 4W LED is equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb, which will save from 30-90 percent of power consumption with the longevity running to 50,000 hours.
For businesses who want to invest in energy efficient products, what energy efficient measures can they easily adopt and apply?
High technology is usually applied in most energy efficient products. Vietnamese businesses have not mastered high technology. Therefore, they should learn about products that are made by other countries to apply the technology in accordance with the domestic situation. Another way is that businesses can undertake research into developing new products through their own creativity. However, the second way is quite difficult, as it requires high creativity and huge amounts of capital. As a result, the most effective and popular way is to find the technology that other countries have applied and then seek business cooperation and technology transfer opportunities. Currently, many Vietnamese businesses have taken the initiative in importing products to assemble. Engine parts that can be innovated domestically will be made use of. This is an immediate measure for domestic businesses, especially those who don't have much capital.
What activities have the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for Energy Efficiency implemented to assist businesses?
Founded in late 2010, the Association is responsible for disseminating scientific and technological knowledge, mobilizing the community to save energy, performing scientific research and technological development, coaching, training, and transferring science and technology on energy saving.
Vietnam has great energy saving potential. Therefore, short term activities that will be focused include promoting the law on EEC. In addition, the association will establish centers for energy efficiency and conservation consultation in big cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These centers will provide consultancy on the best energy saving measures for people and businesses so that they can reduce power consumption from 15-30 percent and event buildings, restaurants, hotels and the transport sector.
Which economic sectors have the greatest energy saving potential? How will the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for Energy Efficiency provide advice on applying energy saving measures?
Sectors that have great potential for applying energy saving measures include industry, transport, construction and buildings and households. In the transport sector, the association will focus on promoting technical measures which will help vehicle users to use energy efficiently. For example, traffic lights will operate more efficiently. Green lights will be turned on so that vehicle users don't have to stop and then save energy.
Construction and building is among sectors that consume up to 30 percent of all energy use. The reason is that energy saving measures have not adopted by architects in the past. Therefore, buildings and houses have few glass windows. Meanwhile, cooling systems are inappropriate resulting in energy consuming, especially lighting and air conditioning. The association is accelerating consultancy services so that energy saving measures will be incorporated into building design. Currently, lights often have to be turned on all day long in buildings and apartment blocks, which consume a large amount of energy. This lighting system can be replaced by induction lighting to ensure greater lighting efficiency. In addition, many buildings have not made use of natural light. In many countries in the world, roofing is made of glass to make the most use of sun light. Therefore, it is not necessary to use lighting during the day. Vietnam is a tropical country and has plenty of light, so this shouldn't be hard. Furthermore, energy saving measures can also be applied to elevator system. Normally, when a person presses a button to call elevators down, it takes all elevators to go down, which consumes power. With smart elevators, only the elevator that is closest will go down, which will help save power. Similarly, building and office cooling systems are also very power consuming. If natural wind is made use of in these building, it will reduce power consumption for the cooling system from 15-30 percent./.
