Vietnam as a country possessing enormous potential in wind power development (28/2)

According to a survey for the four countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia on wind energy, conducted by the World Energy Agency and the World Bank, Vietnam has the greatest potential of this type of energy. Up to 8.6% of the country’s area has a potential that is evaluated as ranging from "good" to "very good" for building large wind power stations.

According to research by the World Bank, on the entire territory of Vietnam, the two areas with greatest potentiality for wind power development is Son Hai (Ninh Thuan) and the sand hills at a height of 60 - 100 meters from West Ham Tien to Mui Ne in Binh Thuan. Not only does this region have a high average wind velocity, but it also owns the advantage in the small number of regional storms and wind stability. During monsoon months, the rate of the south and southeast wind could be as high as 98%, with an average velocity of 6-7 m / sec, which enables the building of a wind power station whose capacity reaches from 3 to 3.5 mW. Both areas have a hot-dry and harsh weather, and demographically a sparsely-distributed populatation, who are ethnic minorities particularly struggling with hardship.

In addition, offshore islands such as Bach Long Vi, Phu Quy island, Truong Sa (Spratlys), etc, are places where there is a high average wind speed. This indicates good potential in wind power, for instance, through building high-capacity wind power stations to serve as a power supply to island residents.

In Vietnam, the advantages concerning wind power and the policy by Vietnam Government on this matter is quite clear. In the national energy development strategy by 2020, Vision 2050, it is intended that by 2050, wind power will account for about 11% of the 2050 total primary commercial energy production. In order to promote this field, Vietnam also has a policy to subsidize wind power factories. Until now, there have been almost 20 wind power projects launched in Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan Bac Lieu and Lam Dong provinces. In Binh Thuan, there have been 16 registered wind power projects, with a total capacity of 1350 MW. Also, in this province, the first wind power plant in Vietnam, which is financed by the Vietnam Renewable Engergy Corporation (REVN), was officially inaugurated in April 2012. The first phase of the project in Binh Thanh Commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province, is deployed over an area of 350 ha, with 20 wind power turbines, each possessing a capacity of 1.5 MW.
