Chairing the video meeting, which included leaders of localities nationwide, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said this was a key moment for national security, as China had kept its illegally placed drilling rig inside Viet Nam's waters since May 2 in defiance of the law and Viet Nam-China relations.

China's move not only seriously violated Viet Nam's sovereignty and jurisdiction and affected the relationship between the two countries, but also gravely threatened peace, stability and security in the region, he said.

Dung underscored that under the circumstances, it was crucial to exert every effort to safeguard national sovereignty by peaceful measures in conformity with international law, and at the same time maintain an environment of peace, stability, security and order to serve the country's socio-economic development.

"We must do all we can to reach our annual targets," he said.

At the meeting, Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh reported positive progress in the first half of this year, with controlled inflation, a low consumer price index (CPI) rise, stable market prices and balanced supply and demand.

Additionally, the interest rate had dropped, helping ease difficulties for businesses, while the foreign exchange market was basically stable, he said. Moreover, exports maintained high growth and the country continued to enjoy a trade surplus.

The minister affirmed that GDP growth in the first six months of this year reached 5.18 per cent, much higher than that of two years ago.

The meeting will continue today. The leaders will discuss reports on topics including progress in the restructuring of State-owned enterprises and the East Sea situation.
