
Conference seeks to boost investment in ethnic minority & mountainous areas (08/12)

They heard a report on Viet Nam’s socio-economic development as well as policies targeting to lure more investments and foreign aid for ethnic minority areas.
Delegates also discussed orientations and measures to implement a project on strengthening international cooperation to support socio-economic development in the region and a national program to mobilize aid from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the period 2013-2017.
Addressing the event, Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc thanked international organizations and foreign partners for their great assistance for the socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in Viet Nam.
Mr. Phuc stressed the necessity to perfect planning; exploit potentials in agro-forestry processing; develop ecological and cultural tourism, building materials, and small-and-medium-sized irrigation works.
The Government leader also asked for appropriate policies to lure large-scale investment in order to upgrade transport infrastructure; better poverty reduction; ensure social security; and safeguard the environment.
At the conference, NGOs committed to US$ 200 million in aid for 261 charity programs and development assistance projects in the next three years.
Meanwhile, the military-run telecom group (Viettel) and the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Viet Nam (Vietcombank) pledged US$ 480 million of credit to help stimulate socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in 2015./.
