Specifically, Viet Nam’s road quality was ranked 93, up 11 notches while railway and aviation quality index jumped 4 notches and 12 notches, respectively.

The report shows that Viet Nam made significance improvement in comparison with China, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, in terms of absolute value, Viet Nam was positioned at 93 out of 140 countries surveyed.

Improving the competitiveness of infrastructure sector becomes a mandate, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong told our reporter in a recent interview.

Viet Nam has faced critical capital shortage, leading to modest investment in railway infrastructure, he said, adding that the Ministry of Transport has submitted to the Prime Minister adjustments to the Strategy for railway development through 2020, vision to 2050.

In the next five year, the Ministry plans to give priority to upgrading the existing railway systems, especially the North-South rail line to increase the average speed of passenger and cargo trains to 80-90 km/h and 50-60 km/h, respectively.

The Ministry will also accelerate the progress of urban railway projects in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, mull over the construction of an express railway project linking the North and the South.

Mr. Dong said railway projects require huge investment capital volume, thus the sector needs to mobilize more resources from other economic sectors, particularly private one.
