In 2011, the Vietnam rice production sector achieved an impressive record both in terms of productivity and export volumes with 42 millions tonnes of rice produced and seven millions tonnes of rice exported. Theo số liệu từ tổng cục Hải quan, trong tháng 1.2012, Việt Nam bất ngờ xuất siêu 172 triệu USD sau sáu tháng nhập siêu liên tiếp. Kết quả này có sự đóng góp lớn từ phía nhập khẩu khi mà kim ngạch nhập khẩu chỉ đạt 6,9 tỉ USD, giảm mạnh 26% so với tháng 12.2011 và giảm 14,7% so với tháng 1.2011.
